Expertise in permanent hair removal treatment

Removing Unwanted Hair With Laser Hair Removal

Laser therapy has revolutionized treatment of unwanted body hair. Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) offers laser hair removal for those who want permanent hair removal. Traditional hair removal techniques — such as shaving, plucking and waxing — provide only temporary relief.

Laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment inside the hair follicle without damaging other skin structures. The laser targets only actively growing hairs. The current technology allows us to treat all skin tones safety and effectively.

What to Expect

Do not wax or pluck the hair in the area of the removal prior to laser hair removal. We’ll provide you with a pair of goggles to protect your eyes. The technician places a small handpiece (wand) against your skin and activates the laser.

The Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD) — attached to the laser — sprays liquid cryogen onto the skin simultaneously with each laser pulse. This helps alleviate the slight sting of the laser pulse. This system minimizes the level of discomfort during treatment.

The technician repositions the handpiece and activates the laser again. We repeat this process as long as it takes to treat the entire area.

Pain During Laser Hair Removal

While some areas of the body are more sensitive than others, most people report manageable discomfort. If you may be more sensitive, we can apply anesthetic creams before your treatment.

Side Effects of Laser Hair Removal

Right after the treatment, your skin will look pink and slightly swollen, similar to a sunburn. This will subside within an hour or two, and the skin will return to normal. Occasionally, a person will have temporary pigment changes, blistering or scabbing. A test spot is the best way to determine how your skin will react.

Number of Sessions

The number and interval of sessions varies for each person. Because hair cycles through growth and dormant phases, you will need at least five treatments. Regrowing hairs are usually lighter and thinner. It is best to return for your next session as soon as you notice new hair growth.

Once you have achieved your desired results, we recommend you come back for maintenance treatments about once a year. In addition, you also may need hormonal treatment.

Laser Hair Removal Pricing

Each person's hair type and density varies greatly. Therefore, we cannot set a standard price list. We encourage you to come to our office for a cosmetic consultation. During this visit, we can provide you with pricing details specific to your needs.
