Gerontology Research

Improving Health Care for Older Adults

BIDMC's Division of Gerontology is committed to advancing knowledge about aging in order to improve health care for older adults. The Division's research faculty members are located at two sites: BIDMC's main Boston location and Hebrew SeniorLife's campus.

Hinda and Arthur Marcus Institute for Aging Research

Our research faculty at Hebrew SeniorLife holds appointments at BIDMC and the Hinda and Arthur Marcus Institute for Aging Research, which is one of the nation's leading clinical and translational research centers in gerontology. The Marcus Institute receives significant NIH grant support, making it a leading research institution nationwide.

Our Research Topics

Researchers based at BIDMC work in several areas, including:

  • Pre-operative Geriatric Assessment and Decision Making
  • Geriatric Diabetes Research Program
  • Falls and Mobility
  • Dementia and Delirium
  • Frailty Assessment and Outcomes
  • Osteoporosis and Fracture
  • Nutritional Health and Outcomes
  • Neuromodulation
  • Medication Safety

Based on our research into frailty, faculty led by Dae Kim, PhD, MPH, ScD, have pioneered a tool for measuring frailty risk in adults, called eFraility. Understanding the patient’s frailty level on the fit-to-frail spectrum can be valuable for applying evidence from clinical trials and best practices in geriatric care.
