About the Wellness Center

The Wellness Center at Bowdoin Street Health Center was built to offer free or low-cost programs to improve your health. We offer two well-equipped exercise rooms and a state-of-the-art demonstration kitchen. We welcome community residents and Bowdoin Street patients alike.

By combining health education, physical activity and support, the Wellness Center follows an approach that’s proven to help people get healthier and stay healthier. Over time, this approach can even lower the risk for obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure—chronic diseases that can be costly to treat. Our programs are offered on-site, in a safe and trusted setting. All classes are free and open to the public.

Our Wellness Programs

Fitness Classes

Our fitness classes are designed for adults, but are open to all levels and abilities. Exercise modifications are available as needed.

Tai Chi/Chair Tai Chi

A series of slow gentle movements and physical postures, a meditative state of mind, and controlled breathing. Chair Tai Chi is for individuals with limited mobility, and it allows the participants to flow through the same Tai Chi movements without risk of falling.

  • Tuesdays, 1:00 p.m. – 1:45 p.m. (Tai Chi)

  • Tuesdays, 2:00 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. (Chair Tai Chi)

Yoga/Chair Yoga

Connects the body, breath and mind using physical postures, breathing exercises and meditation to improve overall health. Mat Yoga focuses on standing poses and movements done on the floor on a mat. Chair Yoga allows participants to perform poses while seated or using a chair for balance. It is a great option for those with limited mobility or who have trouble standing.

  • Tuesdays, 9:00 a.m. – 10:15 a.m. (Chair Yoga)

  • Tuesdays, 10:30 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. (Mat Yoga)

  • Thursdays, 9:00 a.m. – 10:15 a.m. (Chair Yoga)

  • Thursdays, 10:30 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. (Mat Yoga)

Kung Fu

Kung Fu is a Chinese Martial Art where participants learn strikes, blocks, kicks and stance work. Kung Fu incorporates stretching and strengthening exercises. This class is for youth ages 8 and up.

  • Mondays, 5:00 p.m. – 5:45 p.m.

Muscle Movement

Muscle Movement is the perfect blend of strength and cardio training. This class uses dumbbells and body weight to strengthen all muscles from head to toe while raising heart rate to achieve a great full body workout. Muscle Movement Plus adds additional 10 minutes of stretching.

  • Tuesdays, 6:00 p.m. – 6:50 p.m. (Muscle Movement Plus)

  • Wednesdays, 8:30 a.m. – 9:15 a.m.

Line Dancing

Line Dancing is a fun activity that has all the necessary elements to improve cardiovascular health. The Rhythm Riders rotate moving from high to low impact line dances and it is a fun way to get moving.

  • Tuesdays, 5:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Cooking Classes & Hands-on Nutrition Workshops

Interactive cooking workshops are designed to promote healthy eating and food preparation skills.

Children's Programs
  • Healthy Champions: Children will join their peers and learn about urban gardening, participate in physical education games, participate in healthy cooking demonstrations and learn about nutrition.
  • School Vacation Activities: Open to both patients and community members, this is an opportunity for families to sample programs such as ballet, Kung Fu, cooking classes, Paint Nights and more. Offered during Boston Public School Vacation weeks.
  • Fitness in the City Exercise Programs for Kids: Offered in partnership with Boston Children's Hospital, Fitness in the City provides children with valuable access to health coaching, physical activities and nutrition-based resources as they work toward a healthy weight and lifestyle.
