Division of Vascular & Endovascular Surgery

Vascular & Endovascular Surgery Care, Research & Education

Vascular and Endovascular Surgery is one of the three divisions of the CardioVascular Institute at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC). Our expert surgeons provide comprehensive care for all diseases and conditions affecting the veins and arteries.

Our board-certified surgeons are faculty members of Harvard Medical School and have decades of experience managing complex vascular disease. Their extensive expertise spans every vascular subspecialty including aortic aneurysm, carotid disease, lower extremity arterial disease and venous disease.

Our team also leads research initiatives and education programs to train the next generation of vascular and endovascular surgeons.

More About the Division

Care & Services

As national leaders in the development of minimally invasive endovascular treatments, as well as the surgical management of complex vascular conditions, our skilled surgeons are uniquely equipped to determine the best treatment for each individual patient, whether open surgery or endovascular surgery.

Our program maintains a steadfast commitment to quality. Our ongoing rigorous analysis of our clinical outcomes ensures that our patients always receive the best possible care.

Led by Chief Marc Schermerhorn, MD, the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery actively participates in the Vascular Quality Initiative/Vascular Study Group of New England, which enables us to compare our outcomes to those of other institutions across the region.

Aortic Center

As part of our multidisciplinary approach to care, we partner with BIDMC’s Aortic Center, a national leader in the treatment of aortic aneurysm and other aortic diseases, to provide robust care to patients.

The Aortic Center’s team of surgeons and cardiovascular specialists provide some of the most advanced care available for aortic aneurysm, aortic dissection and ruptured aneurysm.

Education & Training

The Integrated Vascular Surgery Residency Program and Vascular Surgery Fellowship Program prepares residents and fellows to function as qualified practitioners of vascular surgery at a level of performance expected of a board-certified specialist.

Research

Our active research program includes extensive clinical research focused on patient outcomes and new technologies. In addition, investigators in the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery oversee National Institutes of Health-funded basic science research.

As leaders of dozens of clinical trials, our team has made BIDMC one of the most prolific vascular surgery clinical trial sites in the world. Clinical trials test new therapies, including both drugs and procedures, and can provide BIDMC patients with an even wider range of treatment options for vascular conditions.
