His particular focus recently has been in study of the potential modification of an over exuberant systemic response to inflammation as exemplified by the cytokine storm reaction sometimes complicating COVID-19 infection or a cytokine release syndrome following CAR T cell therapy using purified fish oil-based emulsions as potential anti-inflammatory therapy. This research is carried out with a former member of the Division of Clinical Nutrition, David Driscoll PhD, PharmD. Other work investigating the pathogenesis and management of severe iron deficiency following bariatric surgery is being conducted with a former fellow of the Division and former faculty member in the Department of Surgery, Peter Benotti, MD. Finally, investigating the role of omega 3 fatty acids in the modulation of cardiac structure and function has been per-formed with Francine Welty MD, PhD, a former faculty member in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine. Dr. Bistrian is in his 40th year serving on the Institutional Review Board, first at the New England Deaconess Hospital and subsequently at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
