Anesthesia, Critical Care & Pain Medicine Research

Message from the Department Chair

The Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care, and Pain Medicine is dedicated to advancing the field of perioperative medicine and the science of anesthesia by generating new knowledge through research and innovation. We work to develop future leaders in research through mentorship, intensive research training and education. We support our researchers from idea generation through study completion and publication. Our department is committed to excellence in patient care, education, and research, ensuring the highest standards in anesthesia, critical care and pain medicine.

Consistent with this goal, our faculty and trainees are actively involved in a wide array of ongoing clinical and laboratory research projects.

Anesthesia, Critical Care & Pain Medicine Laboratories

Explore our diverse research labs, each dedicated to advancing knowledge and improving patient care:

  • Levy Lab: Led by Dan Levy, PhD, this lab focuses on the intracranial meninges (the dura, arachnoid and pia mater layers that cover and protect the brain) and its sensory innervation — the peripheral neuronal population whose activation has been most directly impacted in the genesis of headaches.
  • Longhi Lab: Led by Maria Serena Longhi, MD, PhD, this lab researches how immune responses are regulated in chronic inflammatory statuses and in autoimmune disorders.
  • Robson LabLed by Simon Robson, MB, ChB, FRCP, PhD, this lab studies the functional roles of purinergic signaling in inflammatory diseases and focuses on the contribution of disordered inflammatory responses as modulated by ectoenzymes of the CD39 family.
