At Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center – Chelsea (BIDMC – Chelsea), our staff is trained in adult and pediatric imaging. We also have bilingual staff and interpreter services available. Our board-certified radiologists are the same radiologists who read images at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in Boston, providing the same exceptional care to all of our patients.
Routine diagnostic X-rays are performed as a walk-in service, dependent upon physician orders. Ultrasound and digital mammography are available by appointment only (same-day screening mammography generally available).

Our Services

Digital mammography uses advanced imaging technology to help find breast cancer early, when it is most treatable. Our breast imaging services are provided by experienced technologists and supported by computer-aided detection to help improve accuracy.
Screening mammograms do not require a physician's order.
All technologists are licensed by the State of Massachusetts. The breast imaging program at BIDMC – Chelsea is accredited by the American College of Radiology.
Preparing for Your Mammogram
- Please do not wear deodorant or powder on the day of your exam
- Dress comfortably so you can easily remove your clothing from the waist up

Ultrasound uses sound waves to create images that help doctors diagnose and monitor a wide range of conditions. Exams are performed by experienced, certified sonographers in a comfortable outpatient setting.
We offer ultrasound exams for:
- Pregnancy (obstetric)
- Gynecologic care
- Blood vessels (vascular)
- Abdominal organs
- Small parts, such as the thyroid or soft tissues
A physician's order is required.
Ultrasound images are securely sent to BIDMC's main campus in Boston for prompt review, so your care team can receive results without delay. All sonographers are certified by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).

Diagnostic X-rays use low-dose radiation to create images that help doctors diagnose injuries and medical conditions. Walk-in routine X-ray exams are available for:
- Chest
- Abdomen
- Bones
- Head
- Spine
A physician's order is required for all X-ray exams.
Our digital imaging equipment allows images to be reviewed promptly and shared with your care team. Exams are performed by experienced technologists who care for both adults and children, and images are interpreted by BIDMC board-certified radiologists.

A bone density test is a non-invasive procedure that measures the health of your bones and helps assess your risk for osteoporosis or fractures. The test takes less than 30 minutes. We use state-of-the-art dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), the most accurate test available to measure bone density and support diagnosis and treatment for osteopenia and osteoporosis.
Bone density tests are performed on the first floor at BIDMC – Chelsea, in partnership with the Osteoporosis Prevention & Treatment Center at BIDMC, and under the direction of leading osteoporosis expert Harold Rosen, MD.
Most insurance plans cover one bone density test per year. Please check with your insurance provider if you have questions about your coverage.
A referral is not required to have a bone density test performed at BIDMC – Chelsea; however, your provider must submit an order.
