Organ Transplant Education and Training

Transplant Education Programs

We are committed to developing the next generation of transplant specialists. As a major teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School, we offer numerous education and training opportunities for qualified physicians and medical students.

Specific programs include:

  • Rotations: Our medical rotations provide hands-on transplant anesthesia experiences and electives for anesthesia residents.
  • Medical Student Education: Students at Harvard Medical School regularly rotate through our medical transplant services, acquiring essential clinical experience.
  • Solid Organ Transplant (PGY2): Pharmacy residents participating in this program engage in specialized practice focused on the care of solid organ transplant patients.

Organ Transplant Fellowships

The transplantation program at BIDMC is accredited by the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS) as a two-year fellowship in kidney, liver and pancreas transplantation. The program includes deceased and living donor kidney transplants, laparoscopic donor nephrectomies, deceased donor liver transplants and deceased donor pancreas transplants.

The pancreas program works closely with the Joslin Diabetes Clinic. Deceased donor retrievals are performed under the auspices of the New England Organ Bank, the oldest and one of the largest organ procurement organizations in the country. BIDMC has a renowned transplant immunology research program. At the end of the two-year fellowship, fellows should expect to be proficient in all areas of solid organ transplantation.

The Hepatology Transplant Fellowship is a one-year training opportunity that is one of the country’s only fellowships of its kind accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Education and Training (ACGME). It is also approved by the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases.

We also offer our Renal Transplant Fellowship, a one-year program that is accredited by the American Society of Nephrology (ASN) and the American Society of Transplantation (AST). This training program is open to board-eligible and board-certified nephrologists.

BIDMC is one of the four Harvard Medical School teaching hospitals and has an excellent surgical residency-training program. Harvard Medical School students regularly rotate on the surgical transplant services.

Transplant Institute

The Transplant Institute, part of the Department of Surgery, offers nationally recognized patient care, research programs, and education and training opportunities.
