Mission, Values & Practice Model
Our mission and values are rooted in compassionate care, advancement of the arts and science, and advocacy for our patients and their families.
At Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), nursing is more than a profession — it is a legacy. As a nationally renowned academic medical center and a major teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School, BIDMC is proud to be a place where nurses lead, grow and thrive.
The Lois E. Silverman Department of Nursing stands at the heart of patient care, built on a foundation of excellence, collaboration and compassion. Here, nurses are empowered with voice and agency, supported in their professional development and fully integrated into the fabric of interdisciplinary care, ensuring excellence in patient outcomes and quality care delivery.
We encourage nurses to come find out what makes our evidence-based, collaborative environment unique. Our numbers tell the story. We have more than 400 nurses who have been with us for 20 years or more.
We also welcome area undergraduate and graduate students to explore clinical placement opportunities.

We are proud to be among the 10% of US hospitals to be recognized with the Magnet designation, which signifies the highest level of excellence an organization can receive for excellence in nursing care and leadership.
Recognizing Excellence, Scholarship, and Accountability (RESA) is BIDMC’s recognition program for professional nurses in direct patient care. Through the program, RESA Nurse Fellows and Senior Nurse Fellows are designated twice yearly, based on evaluation of a professional portfolio.
The recognition acknowledges fellows’ contributions to advancing the art and science of nursing at BIDMC and in the broader nursing community. Fellows serve a two-year, renewable term and receive compensation in addition to their regular salary.
BIDMC participates in the recognition program from the DAISY Foundation that invites patients, families, and colleagues to nominate a nurse who demonstrates extraordinary clinical excellence and compassionate patient care. We honor 24 nurses each year with the award. To recognize a nurse for the DAISY Award, complete the online nomination form here.
Our critical care teams have been honored at the national level by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and the DAISY Foundation with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses in Patient Safety.
Nurses on our critical care team have been recognized by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses with The Gold Level Beacon Award for Nursing Excellence, based on their record of positive outcomes for both nurses and patients.
Our mission and values are rooted in compassionate care, advancement of the arts and science, and advocacy for our patients and their families.
