Dr. Mukamal's primary research interests are investigating the role of dietary and lifestyle factors – with an addition focus on alcohol consumption – on the incidence and prognosis of neurocognitive and cardiovascular disorders and their risk factors. As a general internist and clinical investigator, his research has incorporated large-scale epidemiological studies, hospital-based clinical data, and focused interventional studies. The outcomes of this research have also been broad-based and include novel cardiovascular risk factors and subclinical vascular disease, falls and suicide, and biochemical, genetic, and other physiological determinants of dementia and diabetes. His most recent projects include characterization of the role of free fatty acid species in cardiometabolic and neurocognitive diseases in older adults.
