Confocal Imaging Core
About Our Confocal Imaging Services
Confocal and Light Microscopy, Immunostaining, and Image Analysis
The function of the Confocal Imaging Core is to provide services in confocal and light microscopy, immunostaining and image analysis for cells and tissues including:
- Confocal microscopy
- Bright-field and fluorescence microscopy
- Immuno-peroxidase (IHC-DAB) and immuno-fluorescence (IF) staining
- Image Analysis for bright-field and fluorescence images
Work is done on a fee-for-service basis with a graded fee structure.
Facility equipment includes:
- Zeiss LSM 880 Upright Confocal System
- Zeiss LSM 880 Inverted Live-cell Confocal System with Airyscan and FAST Airyscan modules
- Zeiss Axioimager M1 Epifluorescence and Brightfield Microscope
- Dell workstation with Fiji ImageJ and Imaris 9.8.2 3D/4D Visualization and Analysis software
- Contact our Core Staff to schedule an an initial meeting.
During this meeting, the project and experimental details will be discussed. Core staff could suggest which immunostaining technique, microscopy modality and analysis method works best for the project as well as consultation on strategies to accomplish the task. Users have the option of choosing service work or independent use.
Service Work: Core staff provides technical assistance and support to stain, acquire and analyze samples for the users. This service is most suited for users that use core equipment infrequently, and prefer hands-on assistance and support for their staining, image acquisition and analysis.
Independent Use: All users who wish to use microscopes and image analysis software independently are required to receive a formal training from the core staff first. Upon completion of the training session, users will be permitted to operate the equipment independently, and will be given a user ID and password to make reservation on the online calendar. Immunostaining is provided only as a service.
- Schedule a service work session or a customized training session with one of the core staff members.
- Print and complete the Core Service Order Sheet and send it with your request. Please mention the type of service required. For immunostaining, mention the type of staining required: immunofluorescence (IF) or immunoperoxidase (IHC-DAB), the antibodies of interest and the number of slides to be stained for those antibodies. You can mention details under the Comments/Special Instructions section. Please fill out the form in its entirety and enter Grant # (or Dept ID) for internal (BIDMC) users and PO# for external users.
