Anatomic/Neuropathology Track
About the Anatomic/Neuropathology Track
The AP/NP track is an ACGME accredited combined program that involves 2 years each of AP and NP training (4 years total). The AP/NP track makes the trainee eligible for combined AP and NP Board Certification.
The Department offers a two-year ACGME accredited fellowship in Neuropathology. The fellowship emphasizes a multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis of diseases of the nervous system. The service includes a wide spectrum of cases encompassing neoplasms, neurodegenerative disorders, perinatal/neurodevelopmental disorders, infectious diseases and neuromuscular diseases.
Cases are worked up routinely using morphology, immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy, cytogenetics and molecular diagnostic assays. In addition, there are rotations dedicated to cancer cytogenetics and molecular diagnostics. The fellows will also rotate in pediatric neuropathology at Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH) and attend weekly joint meetings at BCH. Fellows participate daily in signout, frozen-section diagnosis, and weekly brain-cuttings. Fellows steer weekly interdisciplinary brain tumor conference, neuropathology/cytogenetics conference and teach pathology residents, Harvard Medical students, and neurology residents and clinical fellows.
Fellows are encouraged to participate in ongoing basic or translational neuroscience or brain tumor research programs with faculty at Harvard Medical School and affiliate hospitals that can be tailored to the research interests of individual fellow. Candidates may continue their fellowship beyond two years through sponsored research. A joint Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Boston Children’s Hospital R25 fellowship in neuroscience is available for applications early during the fellowship.
