Department of Nursing
The Lois E. Silverman Department of Nursing stands at the heart of patient care, ensuring excellence in patient outcomes and quality care delivery.
Supporting our nursing staff
At Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), we are dedicated to the growth and success of our nursing staff. The Department of Nursing offers a variety of professional development opportunities that reflect our commitment to helping our nurses achieve their career goals, build new skills and maintain the highest standards of care quality and safety.
At BIDMC, experienced nurses find a supportive environment where they can continue to grow in their careers. We encourage experienced nurses looking to transition to new specialties to explore our evidence-based onboarding programs for critical care, emergency and perioperative nursing.
Newly hired nurses at BIDMC participate in a comprehensive onboarding and orientation program. This includes hospital and nursing service orientation, as well as a competency-based unit orientation using a preceptor model.

We take great pride in recognizing the knowledge, expertise and impact of our nurses. Each year during National Nurses Week, BIDMC presents dozens of awards to frontline nurses, including peer-nominated awards for excellence in practice.
In addition to these awards, we celebrate nurses through the DAISY Awards, a national program that recognizes extraordinary nurses. You can submit a nomination through this DAISY Award nomination form.
BIDMC offers several academic programs for nursing students, new graduates and advanced practice registered nurses. These programs include:
BIDMC supports the academic goals of our nursing staff through generous scholarship programs funded by nursing endowments. These scholarships help nurses pursue baccalaureate, graduate and post-graduate degrees. We also offer academic progression programs for current staff, allowing them to continue their education while working.
BIDMC provides robust continuing education opportunities that support the ongoing learning needs of our nursing staff. These programs focus on clinical excellence, patient safety and professional growth.
As an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Association Massachusetts, BIDMC helps nurses stay up to date with the latest in healthcare.
Unit-based professional development opportunities are available to allow nurses to specialize in clinical areas or take on leadership roles.
Each month, teams of clinical staff present at Nursing Grand Rounds, covering topics related to clinical care and professional development. Nurses also have access to professional forums where they can share ideas, learn from colleagues and expand their professional networks.
Nurses at BIDMC have access to resources that help them contribute to research and ensure that their practice is evidence-based. This supports our goal of advancing the art and science of nursing.
Recognizing Excellence, Scholarship and Accountability (RESA) is BIDMC’s program for professional nurses in direct patient care. RESA recognizes practice excellence, knowledge, competence, commitment to quality and leadership.
The RESA program is a platform for nurses to chart personalized paths along the domains from which the program takes its name: excellence, scholarship and accountability in nursing practice. It acknowledges nurses’ contributions to advance the art and science of nursing at BIDMC and in the larger nursing community.
