Bipolar disorder, once known as manic depression, is a disorder that most often causes extreme mood swings, from periods of abnormally elevated mood to periods of depression. Bipolar disorder is a serious condition that left untreated can cause risky behavior.

Overview and Symptoms

During a manic period, the individual is unusually energetic, very upbeat and irritable. During a period of depression, he/she has a negative outlook on life and, in some cases, may be suicidal. Extreme changes in energy, activity and sleep accompany these dramatic changes in mood; the intensity of the changes depends on the severity of one’s bipolar disorder.

Treatment

With proper diagnosis and ongoing treatment, many people with bipolar disorder lead productive lives. Medications and psychotherapy are helpful in addressing bipolar symptoms — even those with the most severe forms of the disorder.
