General Gastroenterology Program

A Home for Comprehensive Digestive Care

The General Gastroenterology Program at BIDMC is a comprehensive clinical home where patients with the full spectrum of gastroenterology conditions can receive exemplary care. Our expert team of physicians and advanced practice providers are here to care for simple and complex care needs. As a comprehensive care service, the conditions we treat include but are not limited to:

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • Heartburn
  • Difficulty with swallowing
  • Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE)
  • Celiac Disease
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease
  • Gas
  • Bloating
  • Abdominal pain
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Female health

We work closely with the specialist care services within our division, with whom we can consult, co-manage care, or refer to as personalized to our patient’s needs. Our collaborations include but are not limited to, specialists in IBD, GYN pelvic floor center, motility, pancreas, hepatology, genetics, colorectal surgery, and thoracic surgery.

Our faculty provides colonoscopy and endoscopy services, including screening colonoscopies which are recommended at 45 years old for those at average risk. Our team performs procedures on our main BIDMC campuses, as well as throughout the community Beth Israel Deaconess sites to deliver care closer to home. You can learn more on our Preparing for your GI Procedure page.

Our program is also a home for a range of diagnostic services and treatment options:

  • GI Motility Lab: our in-house laboratory provides advanced diagnosing testing including breath testing, SIBO testing, gastric emptying testing, and more
  • Liver biopsies and fibroscan, a non-invasive ultrasound test that assesses liver stiffness and fat buildup to determine liver health
  • Infusion services
  • GI Psychology Support

We also have several specialized clinics within General Gastroenterology including a program for LGBTQ+ GI Care led by Dr. Alexander Goldowsky. We also work closely with the GI Cancer Genetics program led by Dr. Katherine Germansky. Several of our providers (Drs. Caroline Jouhourian, Lynne Ahn, Jacqueline Wolf) provide focused clinics in women’s gastrointestinal health.
