OB/GYN Residency Didactics
Residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology: Didactics
Residents have weekly protected time from clinical duties to attend didactic lectures on Wednesdays including Grand Rounds from 7-10am. In addition to this protected time, there are several educational sessions every week specific to each service.
Grand rounds is a weekly one-hour lecture series that takes place on Wednesday mornings at 8 AM. The series is comprised of lectures given by invited guest speakers, named lectureships, Chief Resident and Fellow presentations, and our renowned Quality Improvement series. A broad range of topics are covered ranging from preventative medicine to cutting-edge research, advanced clinical matters, and medical education. These are presented in a formal setting attended by all faculty, residents, fellows, medical students, nurses, and administrators within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
The resident didactic series takes place every Wednesday morning and covers a broad range of learning objectives and competencies necessary to achieve proficiency in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology. These lectures are attended by residents and medical students. The series is comprised of both general OB/GYN and subspecialty lectures based on the CREOG Educational Objectives: Core Curriculum in Obstetrics and Gynecology laid out over a two-year curriculum. In addition to these standing didactics, several presentations highlight the importance of topics such as other medical subspecialties’ care of women, quality improvement, and caring for patients in the digital age. These lectures are tailored to the needs of each academic year.

Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS)
Recently the American Board of Obstetricians and Gynecologist (ABOG) mandated all trainees graduate with FLS certification. BIDMC has been ahead of the curve, having required this for the past 11 years! All trainees benefit from spending time in the Carl J. Shapiro Simulation and Skills Center (SASC), where they can hone their laparoscopic skills and maximize their surgical experiences and patient safety. Residents have 24/7 access, and the Center is also an accredited FLS test site.
This annual CRICO-sponsored simulation course utilizes the Shapiro Simulation and Skills Center and provides hands-on training needed in various obstetrical emergencies; including obstetrical hemorrhage, eclampsia, vacuum-assisted vaginal delivery and shoulder dystocia.
Perinatology conference is a weekly interdisciplinary one-hour seminar conducted by the faculty of the divisions of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Anesthesia, Internal Medicine and Neonatology. MFM fellows are responsible for organizing this conference. Presentations and discussions are case-oriented and focus on current complex clinical issues managed by the Maternal-Fetal Medicine service. Attendees include medical students, residents, fellows, faculty, nursing and social service workers. Representatives from a number of consultative services attend regularly to contribute special expertise in Genetics, Radiology, Endocrinology, Hematology, Cardiology, Nephrology and Infectious Diseases.
This weekly meeting is a multidisciplinary conference held every Wednesday morning attended by the Gynecologic Oncology division members and residents as well as pathologists, radiologists, medical oncologists, and radiation therapists to discuss each patient’s clinical course and treatment options.
