We produce future leaders in American medicine. The nurturing of clinical excellence is the foundation upon which that leadership is built.

We believe in fostering the development of imaginative master surgeons, innovators and future educators, who will cross boundaries to identify new solutions to current challenges and those yet to arise.

The roots of the Harvard Surgical Service at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center reach back to 1864, establishing it as one of the oldest academic departments of surgery in the nation. Our explicit mission is to provide advanced surgical care of the very highest quality to those in need, improve health through innovation and discovery, and prepare future leaders in American surgery.

The Roberta and Stephen R. Weiner Department of Surgery at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is a community of more than 160 clinical and research faculty at Harvard Medical School and nearly 100 surgical residents and clinical fellows. All members of the housestaff hold academic appointments as Clinical Fellows in Surgery at Harvard Medical School.

We are the central academic hub for a very large and growing healthcare network throughout eastern Massachusetts. Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is one of the busiest centers for surgical care in the United States, drawing patients, trainees, and faculty from around the nation and the world.

As a curious, inquisitive community, we have one of the largest research programs in the country in basic and translational science, as well as in patient-centered and population-based clinical research. Our surgeons serve on the faculty at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT, the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University, and the Harvard Stem Cell Institute.

Our surgical trainees are supported in the pursuit of advanced research electives through the Richard and Sandra Cummings Surgical Research Scholarship Program, as well as NIH Training Grants. Our residents and clinical fellows are joined in our research centers by a large number of postdoctoral fellows and graduate students, who all own a question, imagine alternative realities, generate ideas, and transform their ideas into extraordinary solutions.
