Musculoskeletal Imaging

Diagnosing Musculoskeletal Injuries & Disease

Our highly experienced musculoskeletal radiologists diagnose injuries and diseases using radiography, CT, MRI, ultrasound and interventions.

BIDMC radiologist going over an MSK imageOur team interprets medical images of bones, joints, and soft tissues to diagnose musculoskeletal (MSK) injuries and disease. We are also a tertiary referral center in New England for bone and soft tissue tumors and image patients from our busy Level I Trauma Center.

Our practice performs more than 70,000 imaging studies in Boston and at our community sites annually. We also work closely with BIDMC's active Orthopedic, Spine, Internal Medicine, Podiatry, Cancer, and Rheumatology services, as well as the Joslin Diabetes Clinic.

Conditions We Treat

We image and treat any conditions related to the musculoskeletal system, including:

  • Arthritis (including osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis)
  • Benign and malignant neoplasms of bone and soft tissues
  • Bone and soft tissue infections
  • Metabolic bone disorders (including osteoporosis)
  • Orthopedic hardware
  • Orthopedic trauma
  • Podiatric disorders
  • Sports medicine

Our Services

Our diverse team of experts provides a complete spectrum of expertise in multimodality diagnosis and image guided therapy for patients with musculoskeletal disorders.

Radiography

Expert interpretation of musculoskeletal radiographs — the cornerstone of musculoskeletal imaging.

Fluoroscopy

Using low-dose X-ray screening, we guide joint injections for degenerative and inflammatory conditions. This can help target joint pain without systemic medication.

Computed Tomography (CT)

Using today's state-of-the-art scanners, CT can be used not only for diagnosis, but also for guidance of procedures such as bone biopsies or sacroiliac joint injections.

Ultrasound

We provide ultrasound as a diagnostic modality for various applications including diagnosis of tendon tears, joint effusions, bursitis, and tendon and nerve subluxation. Ultrasound can also be used to guide joint, bursal or tendon sheath injections, and barbotage for calcific tendinosis/tendinitis.

MRI

Subspecialist interpretation of musculoskeletal MRI is a key component of our service, complemented by technical attention to delivering optimized images using the latest protocols on cutting-edge MRI scanners.

Research and Education

In addition to our clinical work, our researchers continually strive to improve MSK interventional procedures and quality of care, and advance the care of musculoskeletal tumors, muscle imaging, cachexia, and sports injuries. We are also passionate about training the next generation of radiologists through our comprehensive fellowship program.
