Pre-Admission Testing

Preparing for a Surgical Procedure

The Pre-Admission Testing (PAT) Center at BIDMC is designed to help ensure that you are in your best medical condition before surgery, and to help educate you about what to expect before, during and after your surgery.

If you are scheduled for a procedure at BIDMC, you will receive a phone call from a PAT nurse 1-2 weeks before your surgery. The nurse will review your medical history, review how to best prepare for your surgery and answer any questions you might have.

In some cases, you will also be scheduled for an in-person appointment in the Pre-Admission Testing office at BIDMC for further preparation. This visit may be necessary if you require lab tests, a physical, or an in-depth medical history before your surgery. About one-third of all patients require an in-person appointment.

The final step in pre-admission testing takes place on the day of your procedure. At this time, you will be seen by a pre-operative nurse and members of our anesthesia team.
