Drug-Induced Liver Injury
Liver Damage From Drugs and Medication
Some medications and dietary or herbal supplements can cause abnormal liver function tests. Most of the time, your doctor can work with you to adjust medications so that your liver function improves. Sometimes, however, severe injury due to medication use can lead to acute liver failure.
The hepatologists at BIDMC work closely with trained pharmacists to assess liver damage and treat patients accordingly. The physicians at the Liver Center also work with the Transplant Institute to determine if some patients with drug-induced liver injury require liver transplantation.
