Emergency Medicine Physician-Scientist Training Program

The PSTP creates a dedicated pathway for residents aspiring to academic and research careers, fostering a pipeline of physician-scientists ready to address the most pressing challenges in Emergency Medicine. By combining rigorous clinical training with hands-on research experience, this program empowers residents to:

• Excel in clinical care while pursuing innovative research.
• Gain mentorship from expert faculty and researchers.
• Develop and execute impactful research projects during residency.
• Transition seamlessly into competitive fellowships and academic positions.

• Uncompromising Clinical Training: Residents receive the same robust clinical training as peers in the general Emergency Medicine residency.
• Research Integration Across All Years: Engage in research activities throughout residency, culminating in research fellowship in year 4.
• Tailored Pathways: Choose between a 3+1 track (three years of clinical residency + one dedicated fellowship research year) or a 3+2 track (additional research or MPH year).
• Funding Opportunities: Mentorship in applying to BIDMC T32 training programs and opportunity for funding resources to support research.

PGY-1/2: Early Research Engagement

• Participate in focused Emergency Medicine research sessions during resident conferences.
• Work with a longitudinal research mentor who provides personalized guidance.
• Network with peers and faculty through dedicated social and professional events.

PGY-3: Focused Research Time

• Utilize elective time for intensive Aims-Page Development and research projects.
• Submit research abstracts to national conferences such as SAEM.

PGY-4: Fellowship Year

• Benefit from protected research time with ~8 clinical shifts per month to maintain skills.
• Receive in-kind support for research assistants, statistical analysis, and IRB applications.
• Apply for relevant T32 training grants and other funding opportunities.

The PTSP uses an internal application process during the PGY2 year and prioritizes residents with advanced research training. Admission is competitive, with a maximum of two candidates selected annually. Participation requires approval from both Emergency Medicine residency leadership and PTSP faculty.
