The Transplant Institute at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a major teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School, has gained national recognition for our scientific contributions, our fellowship training programs, and our efforts to increase deceased and living organ donation.

Support Groups and Classes

Staff place high emphasis on educating patients and families about their disease, treatment, recovery, medications and much more. Team members are always available to answer questions. Patients also receive detailed transplant educational material that addresses all aspects of the transplant experience.

Classes

The Transplant Institute offers a number of classes for patients and their caregivers. The liver transplantation orientation class provides patients and their families and friends with important information about the transplant process. The class is held the second Tuesday of every month, from 10 to 12 noon, at the Transplant Institute. Patients meet transplant nurse coordinators, social worker, nutritionist and financial coordinator, and topics include liver disease, the transplant program, the evaluation process and required testing, the MELD system, support, nutrition and medical insurance.

We also offer a class on live donor kidney transplantation. This class provides patients and family members with information about this transplant option, the living donation process, and addresses common concerns and questions about kidney transplantation. The class is offered throughout the year, so patients should call the Transplant Institute for specific dates and times.

Support Groups

Social workers or nurse coordinators are happy to introduce patients to others at the Transplant Institute who have received or donated a kidney, and who are eager to share their experience and support.

The Transplant Institute also offers a weekly liver support group and a monthly liver transplant orientation. The weekly group is a drop-in support group for patients who are pre- and post-liver transplant. The sessions are led by a transplant social worker and held on the inpatient Transplant Unit Farr 10. The group provides an opportunity to meet and talk with other patients coping with chronic illness and different phases of the transplant process.
