Specialized and Multidisciplinary Thyroid Care

We offer specialized care for patients with thyroid nodules at our Thyroid Nodule Clinics in Boston and Needham. BIDMC’s Thyroid Nodule Clinic is a specialized multidisciplinary unit offering diagnostic evaluation and comprehensive treatment of thyroid nodules at our Boston and Needham locations. During an initial appointment, patients receive a full consultation with one of our endocrinologists or endocrine surgeons, followed by a thyroid ultrasound and ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy, if indicated. Specialized genetic testing is also offered when appropriate. On site cytopathology is available in the Boston location. Medical and/or surgical follow-up care is scheduled following the initial consultation.

Cutting-edge Care: The Thyroid Nodule Clinic now offers a genetic test called the Afirma Gene Expression Classifier by Veracyte. This test analyzes the expression level of 142 different genes. If a biopsy is indeterminate, the Afirma test can identify the nodule as either benign or still suspicious for malignancy. About half of indeterminate nodule biopsies are reclassified as benign, reducing the number of patients who will need surgery.
Multidisciplinary Team: Our team is made up of BIDMC endocrinologists, radiologists, cytopathologists and surgeons. This multidisciplinary approach draws on the expertise of some of Boston’s finest specialists in the care of people with thyroid nodules.
Collaboration with Referring Physicians: Our team collaborates with referring physicians, following patients through all stages of evaluation and treatment.
