Diabetic Heart Disease Program
Cardiac Care for Patients with Diabetes
Helping patients with diabetes protect their heart health.
The Diabetic Heart Disease Program is a joint initiative of BIDMC and Joslin Diabetes Center, and offers a full range of cardiac evaluation, testing and treatment services. Participants in the program have access to state-of-the-art testing and the most sophisticated treatment options available.
A specially trained multidisciplinary team is available for consultation with referring physicians about medications, non-invasive and invasive testing procedures, glucose control, and other issues related to the heart and vascular health of patients with diabetes.
Early Diagnosis and Prevention
BIDMC and Joslin have created an advanced diabetes and cardiovascular disease program and an algorithm for early diagnosis and prevention of heart attack, stroke, and peripheral vascular complications of diabetes. Specialists in the program consult with referring physicians about medications and glucose control, lipid management, and cardiac evaluations. Our multidisciplinary team includes BIDMC cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, and vascular surgeons, Joslin diabetes specialists, pharmacists, and nutritionists.
Almost half of the cardiac surgery patients at BIDMC have diabetes, and the medical center has developed special expertise in the care of this patient population. For example, by emphasizing strict glucose control following bypass surgery, in partnership with Joslin, BIDMC has nearly eliminated chest (mediastinal) infections after cardiac surgery.
Our Advanced Heart Failure team works closely with BIDMC pharmacists to choose medications that improve outcomes in patients with diabetes and heart failure or cardiomyopathy.
