The Center for Education at BIDMC offers a Teaching Consultation Service for all interested faculty. Consultations are conducted by Center for Education faculty members, who have been undergone extensive training on the principles of adult learning, curriculum development, feedback and evaluation, and peer review of teaching.

Consultations are provided on a range of topics including:

  • Curriculum development
  • Preparation of educational materials
  • Provision of feedback and evaluation to learners
  • Dealing with challenging interactions with learners
  • Teaching in lectures
  • Teaching in small group sessions
  • Teaching at the bedside
  • Teaching in the ambulatory setting

In addition, individuals may request peer observation of a teaching session to receive formative assessment on educational strategies and instructional skills. Videotape recording of teaching sessions is available and recommended to aid in the feedback process.

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is the first academic medical center in the nation to implement a teaching consultation service. This program, funded by the medical center, is a reflection of the commitment of BIDMC to improving education for our students, residents and fellows.
