Fellowship in Transplantation 

Solid Organ Transplantation

The Transplantation program at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) is accredited by the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS) as a two-year fellowship in kidney, liver and pancreas transplantation. The program includes deceased and living donor kidney transplants, laparoscopic donor nephrectomies, deceased donor liver transplants, and deceased donor pancreas transplants. The pancreas program works closely with the Joslin Diabetes Clinic. Deceased donor retrievals are performed under the auspices of the New England Organ Bank, the oldest and one of the largest organ procurement organizations in the country. BIDMC has a renowned transplant immunology research program. At the end of the two-year fellowship, the fellow should expect to be proficient in all areas of solid organ transplantation. Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is one of the four Harvard Medical School teaching hospitals and has an excellent surgical residency-training program. Harvard Medical School students regularly rotate on the surgical transplant services.

Transplant Nephrology

The Transplantation program at BIDMC is accredited by the American Society of Nephrology (ASN) and the American Society of Transplantation (AST) for a one-year fellowship in transplant nephrology. Our goal is to provide specialty training to board eligible or board certified nephrologists, qualifying them to head United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS)-approved renal transplant programs. The fellowship allows a basis for the standardization of transplant training and a method of uniform documentation of education for those who wish to lead renal transplant programs. At the end of the one-year fellowship, the fellow should expect to be proficient in all areas of transplant nephrology. BIDMC is one of the four Harvard Medical School teaching hospitals and has an excellent residency-training program. Harvard Medical School students regularly rotate on the medical transplant services.

Transplant Hepatology

The Liver Center has an AASLD (American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases) ACGME-approved fellowship in transplant hepatology. BIDMC is the only hepatology program in New England, and only one of 17 programs in the country, accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) for training in transplant hepatology. BIDMC offers a one-year transplant hepatology fellowship annually. The program provides specialty training in transplant hepatology and advanced hepatology to board eligible or board certified gastroenterologists. Training includes both outpatient assessment and management of pre- and post-transplant patients, as well as immediate post-operative management of inpatient transplant recipients. At the end of the one-year fellowship, the fellow should expect to be proficient in all areas of transplant hepatology and attain UNOS certification as a transplant hepatologist. BIDMC is one of the four Harvard Medical School teaching hospitals and has an excellent residency-training program. Harvard Medical School students often rotate on the medical transplant services.
