Surgical Care for Critically Ill or Injured Patients
BIDMC is a Level 1 Trauma Center that provides exceptional, state-of-the-art, multidisciplinary care for adults who require emergency surgery because of an accident (except burns) or a sudden illness. We are with our patients every step of the way.
In fact, care often begins before the patient arrives at BIDMC's Berenson Emergency Department, one of the busiest emergency departments in the area. This attentive care continues throughout the patient's evaluation, surgery, and hospitalization; discharge planning; and follows the patient's discharge through our Acute Care Surgery Clinic.
In addition to providing excellent, multidisciplinary care, the division conducts research, participates in the training of medical students and general surgery residents, and offers an accredited Fellowship in Surgical Critical Care.

Acute Care Surgery
We are one of the busiest providers of acute care in the region and one of only a few staffed around the clock by full-time, attending (senior-level) acute care surgeons whose sole responsibility is the care of critically ill surgical and trauma patients.
Trauma Program
As a Level I Trauma Center, we provide the highest level of care to trauma patients and serve as a regional trauma resource.
Surgical Critical Care
Our Surgical Critical Care service provides multidisciplinary, well-coordinated care for patients after surgery. Staffed 24/7, our service ensures that seriously ill patients are monitored and receive the specialty care they need to recover.
