Transitioning from Pediatric to Adult Neurological Care
Moving from pediatric to adult healthcare is an important milestone. For many young adults living with neurological conditions, and for the families who love them, it can also be a time of change and uncertainty.
Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) Neurology welcomes adolescents and young adults who are transitioning from pediatric neurology care. Our experienced adult neurology specialists work closely with referring providers, including colleagues at Boston Children's Hospital, to help make the transition to adult care as coordinated and straightforward as possible.
Located just across the street from Boston Children's Hospital, BIDMC offers convenient access to adult specialty neurological care while maintaining close communication with referring pediatric teams whenever appropriate.
What to Expect
Your first visit focuses on getting to know you, not just your diagnosis. Your adult neurologist will review your medical history, current treatments, and future healthcare goals while helping you establish ongoing care within an adult neurology practice.
Depending on your condition, your care team may also discuss topics such as:
- Long-term treatment planning
- Medication management
- Transitioning to greater independence in managing your healthcare
- Planning for school, college, work, or other life changes as they relate to your neurological care
Every patient's transition is different, and your care will be tailored to your individual needs.
Our Relationship with Boston Children's Hospital
Many of our physicians regularly care for patients transitioning from Boston Children's Hospital. When appropriate, our adult neurologists communicate directly with pediatric providers to help ensure important medical history, treatment plans, and ongoing care needs are shared during the transition. Our goal is simple: to make the move to adult neurology care as smooth as possible.

Referrals
Patients are typically referred directly from their pediatric neurologist to the appropriate adult specialty clinic.
Our scheduling teams work closely with referring providers to coordinate appointments and facilitate the transfer of relevant medical records.
