Division of Hematopathology
Specialized Hematopathology Expertise at BIDMC
The Division of Hematopathology, within the Department of Pathology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), is dedicated to the diagnosis of diseases of the hematolymphoid system. Our faculty, trainees and laboratory staff collaborate closely with hematologist-oncologists at BIDMC and affiliated hospitals to ensure accurate and timely results for our patients.
Division faculty review and sign out cases across a range of specialized laboratories, including those in anatomic pathology (histopathology and immunohistochemistry), clinical pathology (flow cytometry, coagulation studies and hemoglobin electrophoresis), molecular pathology (single-gene PCR and multigene next-generation sequencing) and molecular cytogenetics (FISH and karyotype analysis).
The Division of Hematopathology has a one-year clinical fellowship and accepts up to three trainees per year. Learn more about our Hematopathology team.

Care & Services
The Division of Hematopathology provides diagnostic and disease monitoring services for patients with hematolymphoid disease. This includes morphologic, immunophenotypic, and molecular analyses of peripheral blood, bone marrow aspirates, bone marrow core biopsies, lymph node core and excisional biopsies, and the analysis of any fluid or tissue with a known or suspected hematolymphoid disease.
Education & Training
The Division of Hematopathology faculty teaches medical students, pathology residents, and hematopathology fellows through scheduled lectures, seminars, and during the evaluation and sign-out of active cases.
There are usually two residents and two hematopathology fellows rotating through the service at any given time. The program has ACGME approval for three hematopathology fellows per year for a one-year fellowship.
Fellows divide their time into the anatomic hematopathology (tissue and IHC), clinical hematology (hematology lab, flow cytometry), molecular pathology (single gene and multi-gene assays), cytogenetics (including FISH), and pediatric hematopathology (in conjunction with Children's Hospital, Boston) services.

Research
All faculty are engaged in research and work with interested residents and fellows to develop and complete hematopathology-related projects. Presentations at national/international meetings are encouraged to support the development of trainees' academic careers.
