Cutaneous oncology is defined as all cancers that originate in one of the three layers of the skin: the epidermis, dermis, or subcutaneous fat layers. BIDMC has a long history of innovation in melanoma care, including the use of high dose interleukin-2, and more recently, immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy for treatment of metastatic disease.
Our surgeons have extensive experience in sentinel node biopsy and surgery for advanced or recurrent disease, including resection of abdominal metastases and major lymphadenectomy. We are also experts in the management of unusual non-melanoma cutaneous tumors, including Merkel cell carcinoma, dermatofibromasarcoma protuberans, extramammary Paget’s disease, and metastatic squamous cell carcinoma.
