Gender Affirming Surgery
Gender Affirming Surgery Services
We offer gender affirming surgery for patients with gender dysphoria — a condition in which the sex assigned at birth does not match gender identity. Currently we offer chest reconstruction techniques (sometimes known as “top” surgery), including:
- Breast augmentation
- Periareolar mastectomies (for patients who are candidates)
- Double incision mastectomy with nipple grafting
Surgery is just one component of multidisciplinary care. Patients are first evaluated by a mental health professional (e.g., social worker, psychologist, psychiatrist) to determine whether they meet eligibility criteria for gender confirmation surgery, including a diagnosis of gender dysphoria, before they are referred for a consultation with our surgical team. Patients also need a referral and medical clearance from their primary care provider prior to scheduling a surgical consultation or any procedure.
To enhance recovery and reduce risk of complications after surgery, we require patients to be nicotine free and physically fit prior to surgery. Any patient who is obese (with a BMI of 30 and above) must lose weight before surgery. The surgery itself is done on an outpatient basis, so that patients go home the same day. Most resume normal daily activities in about 4 to 6 weeks.
