Lower Genital Tract Dysplasia Center

Lower genital tract dysplasia is a condition in which abnormal cells develop in the lower genital tract. These cells can either be benign and go away on their own or become pre-cancerous. At BIDMC, we provide regular screenings to examine and remove abnormal cells and provide nonsurgical or surgical treatment when necessary.

The BIDMC Lower Genital Tract Dysplasia Center is the first of its kind in New England to offer comprehensive care dedicated to the entire lower genital tract. In partnership with BIDMC’s Gynecologic Oncology Program, we provide support and guidance to patients going through treatment for a variety of precancerous conditions.

What To Expect

If you are referred to our clinic for diagnostic care, one of our expert gynecologists will perform a pelvic exam and Pap smear in the vulva, vagina, cervix or anus to examine and biopsy the areas for abnormal cells. Your provider may also use a microscope or special magnifying instrument to examine the tissue more closely or test for human papillomavirus (HPV).

Your care team will discuss treatment options with you based on your test results. Options may include regular monitoring of any abnormal cells, surgery to remove these cells, or laser therapy to destroy them.

Our team will be with you every step of the way to ensure you understand your treatment options and care plan.

BIDMC's gynecologists work closely with community-based OB/GYNs, primary care physicians and other specialists to provide consults and ensure the best possible care. We are available for a one-time consult, a second opinion or to partner with you to co-manage suspected malignancy or complicated gynecological cases.
