About Our Sleep Disorders Program
The Sleep Disorders Center at BIDMC is one of the largest comprehensive academic sleep centers in New England and the first to be accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine in Massachusetts. Our faculty is comprised of board-certified sleep medicine physicians and skilled nurse practitioners from both the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine and the Department of Neurology. Each year, our Sleep Disorders Center sees over 10,000 patients across five different locations and performs over 4,000 in-laboratory and at-home sleep studies.
The Center provides patients with comprehensive evaluations and help managing a broad spectrum of sleep disorders, including sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, insomnia, narcolepsy and hypersomnia, REM behavior disorder, and circadian rhythm disorders. Our faculty has special expertise in the management of sleep apnea, narcolepsy and hypersomnia, sleep-related epilepsy, circadian rhythm disorders, and chronic respiratory failure.
Specialized clinics include a hypersomnia clinic for the diagnosis and management of narcolepsy and related disorders; a circadian rhythm disorders clinic that utilizes melatonin profile testing; and a respiratory failure clinic that manages patients who use nocturnal ventilators.
We also collaborate with the Department of Otolaryngology to offer hypoglossal nerve stimulation (the Inspire implant) for selected obstructive sleep apnea patients as well as with the Department of Cardiology to offer phrenic nerve stimulation (the Remede implant) for selected patients with central sleep apnea. Our Sleep Lab also provides standardized testing and highly specialized treatment for complicated sleep-related breathing disorders.
Sleep Device Recall Notification
In June 2021, Philips initiated a voluntary recall for some medical devices used for treating breathing problems during sleep, such as sleep apnea, as well as night-time ventilators for patients with chronic respiratory failure. The recall applies to Philips Bi-Level Positive Airway Pressure (Bi-Level PAP), Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) and mechanical ventilator devices.
