Hospital Medicine (Hospitalist) Program

About Our Hospitalist Program
A hospitalist is a doctor who cares for patients while they are in the hospital. BIDMC hospitalists work on the inpatient medical and surgical floors 24 hours a day at our Boston hospital and at several affiliated community hospitals. Our doctors work closely with patients, their family members, and other physicians. They conduct patient evaluations, organize family meetings, and coordinate patient care with specialists and surgeons when necessary.
Communicating with Your Care Team
As hospitalists, our role is to ensure that patients get the best possible care. This often means coordinating with other physicians, whether they be at BIDMC or outside of our network. This is especially important during the transition from the hospital to home, which can be a vulnerable time. Communicating with patients, family members, and outpatient doctors is just as important as the care we provide in the hospital. Our hospitalists keep outpatient providers fully informed, letting them know when there are any significant changes in the patient's condition and providing a summary of hospital care in a timely manner. We also make sure that discharge medications are correct, follow-up appointments are scheduled, and that all services are in place for a safe transition home.
