Affective disorder actually refers to a spectrum of mood disorders, including major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and vary by individual.

Overview and Symptoms

Those with major depressive disorder experience feelings of sadness and loss of interest in normally pleasurable activities. In addition, loss of appetite and weight, difficulty in concentration, and hopelessness are often evident. Bipolar disorder is often marked by alternating cycles of depression and mania.

Treatment

A psychiatric evaluation is used to diagnose an affective disorder. While the condition can be disruptive to one’s life, medication and/or psychotherapy can provide effective treatment.
