Endometriosis Treatment at BIDMC

BIDMC's Dr. Elisa Jorgensen, an expert in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, discusses treatment options with a patient. The Center for Endometriosis and Complex Pelvic Pain has an outstanding team of specialists who will work collaboratively with you to diagnose your condition and provide patient-focused treatment. Diagnosis may include pelvic exam, ultrasound, MRI, and in some cases, laparoscopy – a procedure that allows the surgeon to view inside your abdomen to look for endometrial tissue outside the uterus.

Conditions we treat include:

  • Endometriosis
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Fibroids
  • Bladder and bowel issues
  • Pelvic floor disorders
  • Infertility

Treatment for endometriosis depends on the severity of your symptoms and your long-term goals, including whether you hope to become pregnant. Your team will work with you to develop a comprehensive treatment plan, which may include:

  • Hormone therapy
  • Minimally invasive gynecologic surgery to diagnose and remove endometriosis tissue while preserving uterus and ovaries
  • Coordinated care to address contributing factors with gastroenterology, urology and physical therapy, among other providers
  • Integrative therapies such as acupuncture or mindfulness training
  • Additional minimally invasive surgery to remove the uterus (hysterectomy) and/or the ovaries (oophorectomy), if necessary
