I love this study. How great is it when an easily available, not expensive, delicious and likely already part of our diet, item is suggested as having an important anti-cancer effect? This small study found that grapefruit juice boosted the impact of cancer treatment, specifically of chemotherapies. Best of all, the boost meant that doses--and presumably side effects--could be reduced. There apparently have been some down sides to grapefruit juice in the past (who knew?), but progress has been made. I am posting an excerpt from MedPage Today and a link about the study from Health Day

Grapefruit juice boosted the bioavailability of sirolimus (Rapamune) in cancer patients, researchers found in early studies. The combination of grapefruit juice and the mTOR inhibitor increased the target area under the curve (AUC) of sirolimus by about 350%, Ezra Cohen, MD, of the University of Chicago, and colleagues reported online in Clinical Cancer Research.
Ketoconazole (Nizoral), which is also a CYP3A inhibitor like grapefruit juice, also increased sirolimus target AUC -- by 500% -- they found.
"The target AUC was attainable at significantly lower sirolimus doses when combined with CYP3A inhibitors," the researchers wrote.
