NBCC and Project LEAD

Posted 3/21/2011

I have written numerous times about the work of the National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC) and referred you to their website :

http://www.breastcancerdeadline2020.org/)

for all kinds of interesting information. Perhaps their most interesting and important new project is the focus on Ending Breast Cancer by January 1, 2020. See the website for details.

Today, however, I am writing to draw your attention to Project LEAD. I have attended this course and learned more in a few days than I learned in many college semesters. Please note that the course itself is free, but that you are responsible for transportation and hotel costs. There is scholarship money available, so don't hesitate to apply because of expenses. Here is the information and my very strongest recommendation to consider it:

As you know, the National Breast Cancer Coalition Fund (NBCC) has been training breast cancer activists to influence research, advance public policy and drive the adoption of quality standards in health care since 1995. We are excited to announce the opening of registration for the 2011 Project LEAD® Institute this summer and turn to you for assistance in recruiting applicants. As NBCC leaders and many of you graduates of Project LEAD, your help is vital in identifying and encouraging women and men who you think should attend the Institute to apply to the course today!

We hope you will help us tell the community what the Project LEAD Institute is all about.

The Project LEAD Institute is NBCC's intensive, five-day science course for breast cancer advocates covering cancer biology, genetics, epidemiology, research design, and advocacy. This course is designed to provide advocates evidence-based scientific cancer knowledge upon which participants can strengthen and empower their work as research advocates.

If you know someone who has a serious interest in scientific study and in preparing themselves for participation in the policy-setting and decision-making roles of research advocacy, encourage them to attend this outstanding training that you know so well.

The Institute will take place July 17-22, 2011 in San Diego, CA. The application deadline for the course is May 20, 2011.Scholarships for those in financial need are available. The course is free to NBCC members, and annual membership is only $35.

We look forward to hearing from applicants from your communities for this truly outstanding opportunity.
