Anxierty and Depression

Posted 7/12/2011

Anxiety and depression, to varying degrees, inevitably accompany a diagnosis of cancer. I worry more about the occasional woman whom I meet who seems to be coping too well and not expressing these feelings. Fortunately, the early period after diagnosis is the worst, and after a treatment plan has been fully developed, things usually seem a bit better. As a woman in one of my groups said yesterday, "We can't control anything, but we learn how to manage things."

From Living Beyond Breast Cancer, this is an opportunity to think more and ask your questions about these normal reactions:

Ask the Expert: Anxiety and Depression

During the month of July, get your questions answered about how to cope with the complex emotions you may feel after receiving a breast cancer diagnosis and after completing treatment for breast cancer, or if you are at high risk for breast cancer. Learn more.

If you have questions about the emotional issues that may concern you as a woman affected by breast cancer; how to control anxiety before, during and after treatment; how to get the support you need from friends and family; or when to seek professional help, ask our expert Drucilla Brethwaite, MSW, LCSW, OSW-C, your question.

We will be posting Ms. Brethwaite's answers throughout the month; see our submission form for more details and submission guidelines, and check back here for updates.
