Cancer Care (www.cancercare.org) is a marvelous group in the New York area that offers a wide range of services and supports to cancer patients and their families. In addition to groups and individual counseling in their offices, they provide workshops in the community and groups online. They also have a number of excellent publications. This is an excerpt and then a link to one, Questions and Answers about Coping with Cancer. It covers the whole broad range of experiences, situations, and questions, and is well worth downloading or ordering.
Q How can I tell if the medical information I'm finding online is reliable?
A With thousands of websites offering information on cancer, it can be hard to know which ones to trust. Here are some questions to ask yourself when researching online:
What is the source of the information? Generally, nationally known cancer centers, large nonprofit organizations, and government agencies provide the highest quality information. (See resources on page 18.) Look for medical information based on scientific data and articles written by well- known medical experts on your diagnosis.
What is the purpose of the site? Sites run by businesses or pharmaceutical companies provide good information about their own products but are not the best place to learn about the full range of treatment options.
Who are the people behind the website? If a company or organization's name, address, phone number, or other contact information is not available, find another source.
