This is a long, but interesting, article from Medscape about the NICE guidelines for the assessment of complementary and alternative therapies. This is not cancer-specific, but all of the modalities are used by people facing many health problems. Here is the introduction and then a link if you want to read more:

Assessments of Complementary and Alternative Medicine: The Clinical Guidelines from NICE

Abstract and Introduction

Introduction

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) regularly publish clinical guidelines about treatments for specific conditions.[1] They are aimed at improving the quality of healthcare within the NHS. Their influence reaches far beyond the UK. According to NICE, these guidelines are 'based on the best available evidence'.[1] In particular, it is claimed that they can:

  • provide recommendations for the treatment and care of people by health professionals,
  • be used to develop standards to assess the clinical practice of individual health professionals,
  • be used in the education and training of health professionals,
  • help patients to make informed decisions,
  • improve communication between patient and health professional.[1
