Whatever your particular situation, wherever you live, whatever your treatment and care choices may be, it is vital that you receive quality care. Unfortunately, you can't assume that every doctor and every institution or office and every treatment suggestion is equal. We are blessed in the Boston area to have a number of world class hospitals and we have wonderful options. Not everyone is so fortunate. I am regularly distressed to hear about bad care that is being delivered some places in our country.
The National Breast Cancer Coalition (www.stopbreastcancer.org) has a wonderful initiative about this issue. They have published a Quality Care manual that clearly spells out what is necessary and helps women find and advocate for what they need. NBCCF has launched a Quality Care Initiative to improve the quality of breast cancer care in this country. This issue is and will continue to be one of the most important and challenging issues facing breast cancer activists.
NBCCF's Quality Care Initiative aims to increase access to and improve the quality of breast cancer care for everyone.
The initiative is guided by NBCCF's patient-centered, evidence-based vision of quality care, described in our Position Statement on Quality Breast Cancer Care . NBCCF's vision is of six overlapping core values:
- Access to all the care you need when you need it
- Information that is complete and correct
- Choice about your doctors and your treatment
- Respect from everyone in the health care system
- Accountability so there is a way to fix problems
- Improvement in the system so breast cancer care continues to get better
