One in eight American women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.
In 2007, it is estimated that 178,480 women in the US will be diagnosed and 40,460 will die from breast cancer.
From 1940 until recently, the incidence in the US of breast cancer rose steadily. In 2003, for the first time, the incidence declined.
There are more women living with breast cancer in the US than with any other (excluding skin cancers). More than three million American women have been diagnosed or have the disease but don't yet know it.
Breast cancer is the second leading cause (after lung cancer) of cancer deaths among women in the US.
Breast cancer is more prevalent in white American women, but the mortality rate among African American women is higher. The incidence and mortality rates are lower in other ethnic groups.
Over two thirds of American women who are diagnosed with breast cancer have no known risk factors.
Only 5-10% of breast cancers are due to a genetic mutation (BRCA1 or BRCA2).
Older women are more likely to be diagnosed. 80% of breast cancers in the US are diagnosed in women over 50; only 5% occur in women under 40.
Attributable to screening and adjuvant treatment of early stage breast cancer, the mortality rate for American women of all races combined declined 2.4% between 1994 and 2003.
