Many of us feel quite anxious about beginning radiation therapy. It is always scary to start a new treatment, not knowing what will happen or what the side effects might be. The concept of radiation can be especially distressing. We are taught, our whole lives, to avoid exposure and, suddenly, we are expected to lie down under the large machines and voluntarily expose ourselves to their beams. In spite of all the reassurances about safety, we notice that everyone else leaves the room and a heavy door is closed.
The techs, who deliver the daily treatment, do everything they can to make the experience easier, but it is always an adjustment over the first few days.
A colleague who used to work at BIDMC's Radiation Oncology Unit and now works closer to her home sent this video which likely will be helpful to anyone who is anticipating this new experience:
