Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery: Research
The Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center will engage in wide-ranging research to help advance the evolving field of laparoscopic surgery and continue to improve patient care.
Research will include:
- Feasibility studies to introduce technical innovation by examining new operations and ways of improving upon operations.
- New technology studies to evaluate new equipment, such as using humidified carbon dioxide during certain laparoscopic procedures to reduce pain.
- Clinical or outcome studies to determine whether laparoscopic surgery is more effective than open surgery for a particular diagnosis.
- One of the first research studies the Center will be involved in pertains to laparoscopic bariatric surgery to treat life-threatening obesity. Surgeons will compare traditional gastric bypass procedures to LapBandĀ® procedures and look for ways to continue to enhance patient care as part of the Harvard Bariatric Consortium.
- Current studies are underway to see if endoscopic fundoplication, a less invasive approach to treat heartburn, will lead to even faster recovery than laparoscopic fundoplication.
- The Center's relationship with the research and clinical departments at BIDMC will promote collaboration and innovation.
