A prodigious and internationally respected enterprise, the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center fosters relationships among laboratory researchers and between basic science investigators and clinicians, accelerating work both in the labs and in the novel therapies we are able to bring to the bedside.

Amid a scientific climate in which revolutionary advances are occurring at an amazing pace - from the sequencing of the human genome to breakthrough discoveries in the molecular bases of common diseases and the creation of an almost unlimited number of sophisticated new technologies - BIDMC has successfully positioned itself to take full advantage of these opportunities.

BIDMC Research at a Glance

  • BIDMC investigators lead more than 850 active sponsored projects and more than 500 funded and non-funded clinical trials.
  • Funding levels have steadily increased over the past 10 years and today, research at BIDMC is a $200 million enterprise, funded by federal, corporate, foundation and internal donor sources, including 72 percent from federal grants.
  • BIDMC consistently ranks in the top four in National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding among independent hospitals nationwide.
  • Research is led by 264 principal investigators who are Harvard Medical School faculty with BIDMC appointments in the medical center's 13 clinical departments.
  • Studies by BIDMC researchers are routinely published in the world's leading scientific journals, including Nature, Science and The New England Journal of Medicine.
  • Key areas of research at BIDMC include vascular biology, molecular imaging, transplantation, signal transduction, cancer biology, metabolic disease and obesity, neurobiology, AIDS, inflammation and cardiology/cardiac surgery.
  • BIDMC's Technology Ventures Office has earned a national reputation for speeding the development of researchers' groundbreaking discoveries through collaborations with private industry.
