Orthopaedic Care: Patient Experience

Patients considering BIDMC for orthopaedic care may want to know about the experiences of other patients with our services.

Inpatient Orthopaedics Service

What are we measuring?

Percentage of patients who received inpatient orthopaedic care that would definitely recommend BIDMC to others.

Why is this important?

Finding out how our patients experience the care that we provide at BIDMC is one aspect of quality and an important measure of our performance. By surveying our patients, we can evaluate how we our meeting our patients' needs from both a clinical and an operational perspective, and make changes for the better in areas that are important to them.

What does our performance tell us?

The chart below shows how BIDMC's performance compares to an appropriate benchmark. Look for big differences in the scores in order to be sure the difference is meaningful. Small differences may not reflect real differences in performance (i.e., they may not be statistically significant).

According to Press Ganey, results of patient satisfaction surveys, 71% of patients in the best performing hospitals would definitely recommend that hospital. At BIDMC, 86% of the orthopaedic patients surveyed said that they would definitely recommend BIDMC to friends and family. Therefore, BIDMC's orthopedic service is among the nation's best performing hospitals for patients who are satisfied with the care they receive in the inpatient orthopaedic setting.

Outpatient Clinic

What are we measuring?

The percentage of clinic patients responding to the likelihood of recommending BIDMC for outpatient orthopaedic care. The score reflects the percent of time that patients responded "very good".

According to Press Ganey satisfaction survey returns, 78% of patients in the best performing hospitals gave a 'very good' score to the likelihood of recommending the outpatient clinic. At BIDMC, 80% of patients responded 'very good' when asked their likelihood to recommend the Orthopedic Clinic to friends and family.

What are we doing to improve our performance?

At BIDMC, we recognize that among the factors influencing a patient's willingness to recommend is the amount of time waiting to be seen by a care provider at an appointment. To address this, we have initiated an effort to reduce waiting times and to communicate more proactively with our patients when there are delays.
