Weight Loss Surgery Care

The Weight Loss Surgery Program at BIDMC provides bariatric care for over 500 patients each year. Our services include gastric bypass, gastric banding surgery, and sleeve gastrectomy surgery.  When choosing a hospital, patients seeking bariatric care should consider the hospital's experience with the surgery, patient outcomes, patients' experiences with care, and the efficiency of care.  We encourage our patients to learn as much as they can about weight loss surgery and its effects on your weight, your health and your emotional well being.  The decision to go forward with weight loss surgery is serious and should be made by the patient once they have received all of the information necessary to make an informed decision. Learn more about the Obesity and Weight Loss Surgery Center at BIDMC.

1 Roux-en-Y - A surgical weight loss procedure in which the stomach is greatly reduced in size, allowing patients to feel full on much less food; in addition, a portion of the intestinal tract is bypassed to further reduce the amount of calories taken in by the body.

2 Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y.   A surgical weight loss procedure in which the stomach is greatly reduced in size, allowing patients to feel full on much less food; in addition, a portion of the intestinal tract is bypassed to further reduce the amount of calories taken in by the body. Laparoscopic surgery requires only small "keyhole" incisions in the abdomen. As a result, the person undergoing the procedure may experience less pain and scarring after surgery, and a more rapid recovery.

3 Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Band - A surgical weight loss procedure used to create the feeling of a smaller stomach. This is accomplished by placing a balloon around the upper portion of the stomach. The balloon can be adjusted over time to optimize results.
