Institute Staff and Resources
The Silverman Institute for Health Care Quality and Safety draws upon the quality and patient safety resources within BIDMC's Department of Health Care Quality. Additional support is provided by generous gifts from donors.
Eleven divisions within the Department of Health Care Quality support the Institute's mission to promote the highest level of safety and quality of care within BIDMC, and to share insights and experience with health care institutions across the United States and internationally.
Critical Care Quality - Providing consultative, coordinative, and analytic support across all BIDMC Departments and Divisions to achieve highly reliable, meticulous critical care that demonstrates safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable, and patient-centered care.
Emergency Management - Designing and implementing programs to ensure a robust and coordinated emergency response capability at BIDMC and community-wide. Emergency Management programs address preparedness, mitigation, response and recovery activities across the institution, including clinical, research, and administrative areas.
Employee Occupational Health Services - Partnering with Human Resources, Environmental Health and Safety, and Infection Control, the Division helps ensure a safe and healthy work environment for employees, volunteers, and contracted personnel throughout BIDMC. The Division provides employment-related health screening; evaluation, treatment and follow-up for work-related injuries, illness or exposures; occupational heath education and training, and other essential occupational health services.
Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology - Improving the quality of patient care by minimizing the risk of infection, this Division establishes collaborative programs for surveillance, prevention and control of infection, emphasizing occupational health and safety, measurable outcomes, fiscal responsibility and total quality management.
Inpatient Quality - Leveraging the clinical resources of the Department of Medicine, Office of Business Transformation, and the Silverman Institute, the Division seeks to improve the quality of inpatient care across the Medical Center by developing standardized clinical processes to ensure consistent and reliable care.
Medication Safety and Health Information Management Quality - Leveraging clinical resources and information technology capabilities to improve patient care across the Medical Center, this Division strives to improve medication safety by enhancing decision support and medication use processes. In health information management, the Division works collaboratively with patient care providers, information systems, finance, and regulatory bodies to insure that the medical record improves patient care, optimizes reimbursement, and complies with regulatory requirements.
Patient Safety - Improving patient care through proactive programs to reduce occurrence of preventable patient harm, the Division's efforts include rigorous and candid adverse event review, analysis, open communication and subsequent corrective action; ongoing patient safety education, consultative guidance and competency development for employees; oversight of regulatory activities associated with institutional patient safety; patient care and treatment advocacy and issue resolution, and risk management.
Performance Assessment & Regulatory Compliance - Aligning strategic goals, regulatory and payer expectations throughout the institution, the Division supports Senior Management in selecting targets for performance assessment, designing approaches for process improvement and systems to assess performance, as well as developing strategies for dissemination of information regarding performance. The Division provides leadership for the overall assessment of performance and regulatory compliance at BIDMC, and serves as a resource to BIDMC's institutional affiliates.
Pharmacy - Working collaboratively with all members of the Medical Center's healthcare team, the Division promotes safe, effective and fiscally responsible pharmacotherapy. The Division provides leadership for fail-safe medication use throughout the Medical Center through education, research and scholarship.
Professional Staff Affairs - Providing supervision and oversight of professional credentialing for medical staff appointments for BIDMC, and guidance, technical assistance, education and consultation concerning credentialing requirements of the Medical Center.
Radiation Safety - Ensuring the safety and protection of patients and staff in all aspects of radiation use and control within the Medical Center.
