Sorenson Video Relay System
The Medical Center is also please to be able to provide access to the Sorenson Video Relay Service (SVRS) in the Shapiro Lobby. The public videophone kiosk, located in the Shapiro Lobby, allows those in the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing communities to conduct video relay calls with family, friends, or business associates.
Calls are placed and received through a professional American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter via a high-speed Internet connection and VRS equipment (i.e., a Sorenson VP-200 videophone and standard TV).
A VRS call involves three persons in separate locations:
- A Deaf caller who uses VRS equipment (videophone) to sign to an interpreter.
- An interpreter who uses VRS equipment (videophone) and a phone headset to relay the call.
- A hearing caller who uses a standard phone to speak.
VRS calls enable Deaf persons to make/receive phone calls through an interpreter or directly to other Deaf people.
Sorenson VRS can also be accessed from any medical center to communicate with a Deaf or Hard of Hearing patient by dialing 1-866-327-8877. Patients wishing to call our American Sign Language interpreters directly can dial 617-274-8450 (VP).
